FULL REBUILD: Upgrading A 1970 Dodge Challenger Restomod From The Inside Out

Detroit Muscle goes on the hunt for their next big build: Project Ultra Violet...a 1970 Challenger. This Mopar is in serious need of a sand blaster! The team salvages a rotted out '70 Challenger with how-to weld in a new metal roof, drip rails and A-pillars. Then, chassis guru Jeff Schwartz brings in his G-Machine chassis to convert uni-body Challenger to a full frame. We show you how to weld in a new trunk pan and fabricate a front cowl panel from scratch before the guys graft the world's first low deck, all aluminum Hemi and T56 six speed gearbox.
Then, it's step-by-step tech on how-to mini tub a muscle car rear end to create clearance for massive tires and celebrity builder Chris Ryan shows how-to lay down metallic paint and graphics on our very purple Challenger. The guys get into how to refurbish an expensive grill, insulate a uni-body plus tips on reassembling brightwork before fabbing a high flow EFI fuel system, serpentine belt drive and dual fan cooling system. Finally, the Mopar interior gets upgraded with performance seats, and a custom dash insert.

I guess you can leave that chrome plate loose, so you have wiggle room to install the alternator etc.

Still pretty heavy with a all aluminum engine and that supposedly lighter custom frame? I dont think they saved much weight at all if any.............Dont care for the stripe. Not sure why they had to customize the classic RT stripe.

Ultimate cars the 1970 Plymouth roadrunner super bird with the high back fin, and the second would be the cuda, but this is the kind of car I would accept hands down. Everything but the white stripe. But that's just me. I'll have to go back a little bit, but what kind of a rear end did you put in this thing? There was nothing mentioned about it. Its just there. What's the gear ratio? Is it full posi?

It's always towing a fine line when doing these type of restorations. This thing was a basket case. The amount of metal work done on it would be cost prohibitive for the backyard mechanic. With the retrofit complete chassis you kinda lost me on it. In the end though it is a very very nicely redone Challenger. Kept it pretty OG on the top and completely new underneath. The only thing I would've like to have seen was to get the bumpers tucked in. Since you already opted to keep the badging off the car its just a nice detail that makes it look a tad bit cleaner.

Cutting out the old suspension, to me, feels like they cut out a part of its soul. This is a nice driver and a fun car, but for me it’s ruined.

Normally I would agree as a classic car appreciator, but for what they wanted out of the car, the Schwartz suspension was pretty much a requirement

Very fine job done. I’d do it too if I had the money. At least decent video by American standards. (Very often) Silly barbwire voice presentations and annoying guitar nonsense.. Love for design and style from when it was as its best mid-late sixties.

I've seen them all before but having all the episodes in one vid is pretty cool. That said for my tastes I've just realized I'd prefer OEM type restos, even if they're a tribute car. Thing is for the money spent on this, personally I'd just buy a new Challenger and get a blower kit and add a bit of ring gap. If I had the choice between old and new Challenger I'd go an old one and make it a Hemi tribute with a few relatively undetectable mods. I'd get a 528 Hemi with aluminum block painted to look OEM as much as possible, a D60 with discs (nothing huge), a 5sp, upgraded torsion bars - a few sort of discreet type mods to make it cruise, stop and handle a bit better. I want to keep the clank of the Mopar torsion bars keep it as true to Mopar as possible. As well I'd have a solid lifter flat tappet camshaft so I can enjoy cold starts just that little bit more and enjoy going to the shed and adjusting the tappets just because I can. I want the near full experience without the brake fade and high rpm cruising.

Beautiful restomod… but those rims??? 🤦‍♂️ I know it’s a restomod, but I think you need something similar to the original, or Cragars, or just something more appropriate.
