Dr Hanna - loved "operation recovery". It's the journey that matters most. Overlanding winter tip - always have a few 10lb bags of kitty litter in the truck - it'll give you the best traction in an emergency and the added weight is good in sloppy snow.

Chains young lady. Chain up before you need them. Disregard anybody who poo poos the chain idea. Chains on the front first. And if you need more, chains in the back too

I Love your set up Trust me on this one if you had aired down your tires you would have drove anywhere in that snow you wanted to. check out some videos on airing down ,one big tip on airing down dont spin you tires. LOVE your videos thanks. i air down to 15 psi in my 3/4 ton if that doesn't work take another 1 to 2 psi out makes a big difference

Airing down in the snow helps a lot, dropping to 20 psi or so.

Maybe try taking some chains if you are planning on tackling North Pole conditions. Unless you enjoy the digging :p It's funny that even a Dr needs to show some skin to be relevant. All that studying for nothing. haha :p

Girl, you need 2 sets of tire chains. Also, you need to get a tire chain repair tool and chain repair parts. I was up one year and lost a link on a tire chain. Needed all four to get out of the area, used bailing wire to repair the tire chain. I hunt late season elk hunts. I have a setup similar to yours (F250 and popup camper). I have stayed in the camper with temperatures below negative 20. I finally had to get a new popup this year the roof on my old one disintegrated. Stay warm! Hey Dr. Straight, hope you found a wench for your rig. Some of my friends have been using the Badlands APEX 12000 pound wench and Smittybilt XRC Gen 2 or 3. Both steel and synthetic cables. They've had good success with theirs and so far no issues and good reviews. Bang for the buck so to speak for both. unless one of the manufacturers sponsor you. They of course had to upgrade on a new bumper. I also have a F250 I am upgrading, so please update us on your rig upgrades and durability. Great work on digging out of that. It is hard work. Good luck and have fun on your travels. Got some of your coffee and take it on my camping trips with friends for a quick morning caffeine fix. Some of the recovery comments/suggestions are good.

Re iterating what has been said before. Carry chains. A winch is nice. But knowing when to use chains is sage information. Yes Chains work. I live on the east side of the sierras and see this every year. If your going to do this again. Message me before hand so i can come pull you out. Knowing where you are saves allot of time getting to you before you run out of fuel and water.

Just a thought or two, when you get stuck, DO NOT SPIN THE TIRES, ZERO. When you spin the tires, even the smallest amount, this creates ice and or digs a hole and you are transitioning from static friction to kinetic, none of which will help you. Static friction is greater than kinetic. Try backing up, be very, very, very gentle with your throttle application again so you do not spin, zero. This takes finesse, patience and practice. There is a very good chance you will be able to move even a fraction of an inch. Use this. Now try moving forward, again very, very, very gentle throttle application, ZERO wheel spin. When going forward use 2nd gear as this makes the throttle less sensitive and reduces the engine’s torque to the driven wheels thereby reducing your risk of spinning the tires. You will likely again be able to move that same amount you backed up. Make smooth gear changes between F and R. Your goal now, assuming you are able to move even the smallest amounts, is to continue this action while staying in your tracks moving in reverse until you reach a point that you can try a new track going forward again. I’m a former race driving instructor having worked for the top racing schools in Canada, race driver, truck driver, motorcycle racer, experienced amphibious ATV operator, engineering technologist and have much experience getting stuck and unstuck in snow, mud etc. Winch? You bet! Get a good one and know how to use it properly and understand its limitations. A suggestion is to install the winch on a frame that mounts in a 2” hitch receiver, install hitch receivers both front and rear along with the requisite wiring to enable the winch to be moved to the end of the truck that is most useful in a given situation. Also, get a wireless winch controller but have a wired remote unit on hand also. If you have an open front differential and one wheel is spinning and the other is doing nothing, you can ride the brakes a little with your left foot. This will transfer some torque to the wheel that isn’t spinning and can help get you going. Also, if you are moving, keep moving, don't stop when resistance increases.

After watching this video I have no idea why you would not have a Garmin InReach in your truck or backpack. This could save your life by giving you a lifeline to text a friend or law inforcement when you are out of cell phone range for around $12.00 dollars a month. You should contact Garmin they may want you to advertise this product on your channel. This product could help you and many of your viewers when they get in situations where there is no cell phone service. Please think about it.

For future trips in the snow, try tire chains. I lived at 7000 ft above sea level for many years. Chains are a life saver

Don't fall into the trap of thinking snow and off roading are the same. Or even similar. General purpose light truck tires tend to have ice sipes, so pickups do decent in the winter. Off roading tires suck in the slippery stuff. The treads will dig holes, but once they hit something they can't dig, they don't have the siping to get traction. So they spin in place. Case in point. This video... Look how far that subaru made it... It has a shit-tastic open center diff and two open front and read diffs. Yet it goes just as far as the jeep. At 7:32 the only think keeping it from going is that it's high centered. You can tell the weight isn't on the suspension. You want to go on winter adventures, get winter tires. It's just physics. No grip, no acceleration.
